Everywhere I look I see people decorating their boring, mundane items with vinyl decals to spruce them up, personalize them and give them some much needed life. For me, there just isn’t enough geeky, movie or gamer related goodness in the world. That includes my kitchen, which is as cookie cutter as they get right now.
Time to change that!
Sooooo, I decided to make a Game of Thrones cutting board, because who doesn't love GoT, right? And while I was at it I figured I could show you how to make one for yourself!
Here's what you'll need:
Material List
- Glass cutting board (available at Target for $7.99)
- Vinyl Decal
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Masking tape
- Squeegee
If you have access to a plotter/cutter (such as the Cricut or Silhouette, or a professional one for heavy duty projects such as the one we have) you can totally DIY the decal for this project. You can also search the internet for a vinyl decal in the size you need, OR you can grab one from our Etsy shop, which offers a variety geeky decals, at nrdrg.com!
If you’re placing the decal on the underside of a cutting board or behind a glass cabinet door for example, be sure to purchase the reverse option so that the design can be viewed correctly from the opposite side.
Using Windex or other glass cleaner, wipe down the back of the cutting board so the decal adheres properly to the glass.
Find the center of your decal with a ruler, or if you're feeling adventurous eyeball that shit. Once you have it exactly where you like, use masking tape to hold it in place by taping down the top edge of the decal to the cutting board.
At this point you should be able to lift the decal as if on a hinge. Now this is where the fun part begins!
Lift one of the corners closest to the masking tape...
and slowly peel it back to expose the vinyl.
Use a squeegee or credit card to slowly smooth the decal on to the glass surface.
Be sure there is perfect contact between the decal and the glass.
Slowly peel back the transfer tape to expose your decal. If a piece of vinyl remains stuck to the transfer tape simply lower the transfer tape, go over it with your squeegee or credit card again to insure it is secure and peel the tape back again. Repeat as necessary.
Flip your glass cutting board over and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Grab some crackers, cheese and wine, and go binge on the last season of Game of Thrones!
Quick note: Most adhesive vinyls are made to last a long time, however keep your placement in mind, as some applications will have a longer shelf life than others. For example, a decal on a cutting board, because it has to be washed, will last less than one placed on the fridge door. Putting your cutting board in the dishwasher day after day, will also shorten that life span.
I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial and if you have any questions about our vinyl decals and their application, please feel free to contact me. I'm always happy to help.
